McLaughlins, von Coellns & Extended Family
"In those days they combined engineer, city planner, and other jobs together into the city manager job. That way they could pay you something. He was a tall man, and he loved his job in Avalon. He would often walk the town streets and everyone knew his name." --Erhard Schaber, son-in-law As the City Engineer and City Manager from 1932-1940, Earl Reinhardt "E.R." Pollok not only kept the town running, but did a lot of engineering work as well. Below are some of the drawings and pictures he took of the city. E.R. retired from Avalon at age 70, and continued working in the San Pedro area until 1956. |
The aerial photo of Avalon below was taken by E.R. around 1933 and received a copyright. The left seal is of the City of Avalon, California Incorporated July 20, 1919. The right seal is from the Freeholders Improvement Association of Avalon California. The photo was then turned into a souvenir (see 2nd photo directly below) and highlighted different features of Avalon. Note that in the lower right corner of this picture, it shows the photo copyright by Earle R. Pollok and dated (in pencil) 1933. The photo was published by John D. Cordinell |
E.R. was also deputy city clerk for Avalon, as noted in this 1939 resolution (below) that the City Council published, expressing their regret for the resignation of Lehman W. Crandall as Mayor of the City on January 30, 1939. |
Believe this Map of Catalina (below) that E.R. had in his scrapbook was from the US Geological Survey done during that time |
