The town of Avalon was established in 1887 by George Shatto as a resort. Below are pictures of Avalon in 1886.
The little hill at the far right of the picture above was called "Sugarloaf" and was later flattened to build the Avalon Casino, an icon of the city. In the early years prior to George Shatto defending his ownership of the island, there were squatters and others would pitch tents and come to vacation on the island |
